Many candidates attempted this question. Only a few of them were unable to answer the question satisfactorily.
The following points should be well developed by the candidates:
- Eugene’s anger at Jaja on Palm Sunday when he hurls his missal at him for Jaja’s refusal to receive Holy Communion and his remark that, ‘the wafer gives bad breath’.
- Jaja’s skipping of supper knowing that his father does not tolerate deviation from the daily routine of activities.
- Jaja’s request for the key to his room from Eugene, who concludes that Jaja has bowed to pressure from the devil to commit sin against himself.
- Jaja taking responsibility for the death of his father who was poisoned by his mother, Beatrice.
