Question 3
BAYO ADEBOWALE: Lonely Days
Discuss the theme of loneliness in the novel.
Observation
A good number of candidates attempted this question, though not many of them were able to discuss the theme of loneliness. Some of them brought out instances from their personal experiences.
The required answers should include:
• Yaremi's loneliness as a result of her husband's death and her children's departure from home.
• Widows are believed to have killed their husbands. Hence, they go through torture.
• Yaremi was very lonely and had to do most of the chores herself. She had to appeal to Uncle Deyo, Ajumobi's friend to assist in mending her leaking roof.
• Yaremi was expected to remarry but she chooses to remain single.
• As a result of her refusal to pick a cap during the cap-picking ceremony, the village elders threaten to confiscate her husband's property and banish her from the village.
Candidates' performance in this question was fair.
