Question 6
RICHARD WRIGHT: Native Son
What is Max’s attitude towards racial relations in the novel?
Observation
Few candidates attempted this question. Many of them gave mere narrations and irrelevant points that cannot be found in the text.
The required answers should include the following:
• Max's acknowledges Bigger as an individual and serves as the Public Defender on his behalf.
• Max is a communist and a Jew who understands systematic racism. This experience makes him understand Bigger better than other characters.
• Max disapproves of a system that moulds an individual into a criminal of which Bigger falls victim.
Candidates' performance was poor.
