Question 6
Comment on the use of irony in the novel.
Observation
A good number of candidates attempted this question, although, many of them were unable to point on instances of irony as they didn’t understand the meaning of irony and mixed it up with other figures of speech such as hyperbole, personification and metaphor.
The following points should be well developed by the candidates:
• The interaction between Bigger and Mary.
• Mrs Dalton’s perception in her blindness.
• Mrs Dalton’s blindness to reality.
• Mr Britten’s show of more anger than Mr Dalton.
• Bigger’s show of ‘faked bravery’ in the face of fear.
Candidates' performance was poor.
