Few candidates attempted this question, but failed to show Frair Jerome’s importance in the development of the plot. They did not point out his interaction with major characters in the novel and his role in quelling the uprising in the castle.

Candidates were expected to mention the following points among others:

* Friar Jerome and his priestly duties.

* His interaction with the persons in the castle – Hippolita, Matilda, Isabella and Manfred.

* His role in quelling turbulence in the castle.

* Frair as the biological father of Theodore.

* His upholding of the prophecy about the principality of Otranto.

* He witnesses the marriage of Isabella and Theodore.

Candidates’ performance in the question was poor.
