This was not a popular question. While some candidates mistook Matilda to be Manfred’s wife, others only gave sketchy narration of the strained relationship between father and daughter.

The following points were expected from the candidates:

• • Identification of Matilda and Manfred.
• • Manfred’s attitude towards Matilda.
• • Matilda’s feeling towards her father.
• • Matilda’s acceptance of her father’s treatment of her (as a stranger).
• • Matilda’s forgiveness of Manfred at her death.

Candidates’ performance in the question was poor.
