A good number of candidates attempted this question. Most of the candidates were able to describe who Henry Dalton was while mentioning Mary’s death. They, however, failed to organise their points with adequate details.

The following points should be well developed by the candidates:

• Background of Mr. Dalton.
• His relationship with the blacks.
• His employment of black people in his mansion.
• His short-sightedness.
• Mr. Dalton’s demonstration of hypocrisy.
• Mr. Dalton as a misguided philanthropist who does not understand social realities.

Candidates’ performance in this question was poor.
