Question 8
HORACE WALPOLE: The Castle of Otranto
Examine the use of irony in the novel.
Observation
Another popular question among candidates and a bonus question it seemed. Candidates performed well as they were able to relate irony to the development of the plot.
The following points were expected from the candidates:
- The first instance is the murder of Alphonso the Good by a chamberlain he trusts (Ricaldo, the usurper).
- Bianca’s intimidation to Matilda that Theodore and Isabella are having romantic understanding which later turns out not to be so.
- Dramatic irony unfolding in the novel.
- Mistaken identities in the novel.
- Manfred’s claim of having a biological relationship with Hippolita, whereas Hippolita has already calmly accepted his offer of divorce.
Candidates’ performance in this question was very good.
