Question 7
EMILY BRONTE: Wuthering Heights
Comment on Heathcliff’s behaviour after his return to Wuthering Heights.
Observation
Candidates were able to point out who Heathcliff is and his relationship with other characters.
Candidates were expected to discuss the following:
- Revenge is an important theme explored in the novel.
- Character identification: Heathcliff is the child brought to Wuthering Heights from Mr. Earnshaw’s trip to Liverpool and who becomes the owner of both Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange.
- Background: Heathcliff is abused by Hindley after Mr. Earnshaw’s death; Catherine and Heathcliff become lovers; disappears from Wuthering Height when he overhears Catherine say she cannot marry him because of his degraded situation.
- Heathcliff reappears after several years.
- Heathcliff’s revenge: He becomes oppressive and callous; marries Isabella to get at those who have ill treated him; abuses Hareton (Hindley’s son) and treats him worse than a servant; contrives to have Catherine marry Linton to consolidate their inheritances.
- In the end, Heathcliff owns Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange.
Candidates provided sketchy answers which showed a lack of knowledge of the text.
