Observation
This question requires the candidates to comment on the theme of family reunion in the novel.
Candidates were expected to discuss the following:
- The themes of social dysfunction loss of vitality of the system breeds corruption, illicit dealings, thievery, opportunism, etc.
- The identification of the Marshark as a Ghanian, Nii’s new found love and a commercial sex worker in Nigeria.
- Why Marshak is in Nigeria: her family is targeted by the revolution; her father has been shot and their family properties confiscated.
- Conditions of Marshak’s life: she hides in a hotel to avoid the Immigration; she entertains her clientele there, including boys; she pays the hotel proprietor with sex sometimes.
- The end of Marshak: When Nii returns to apologize and continue the relationship, it is too late; Marshak lies ‘writhing in pain’ and dying; she dies and is buried with indignity, secretly without any mourning, in a makeshift coffin
