This question demands the candidates to discuss the reasons Mr Noble is unable to evict his tenants.  Most candidates gave a plot summary. Only a few were able to meet the demands of the question.

Candidates were expected to discuss the following:

• The theme of patriarchy, racial discrimination and Western education.
• Character identification of Mr Noble and his tenets.
• The state of the house: the house needs renovation. Mr. Noble cannot renovate the house because he has no money. The tenants are not paying rent.
• The tenants: The tenants know their rights. They are not superstitious or afraid. They are ‘controlled tenants’ and attached to the place.
• The rent law: by the law, a landlord cannot evict a ‘controlled tenant’. A landlord cannot increase the rent. Mr Noble cannot disregard the law. The law works in favour of the ‘controlled tenant’.
