Her death paves the way for further exploration of the events leading to the theme of xenophobia and the loss of Pan-Africanism.
    • Marshak’s contributions to the plot: Marshak’s first meeting with Nii lifts his spirit again after his experiences trying to enter Nigeria. Through Marshak, the reader is able to experience the effect of the Revolutionary Movement in Ghana on the family. Marshak’s death extinguishes the fire of Nii’s expectations of a new life.
