Examine the circumstances surrounding the departure of Adah to England.

This question requires the candidates to discuss Adah’s departure to England and the circumstance surrounding it. A number of the candidates were not able to meet the demands of the question.
Candidates were expected to discuss the following:
- Statement of the themes of patriarchy, racial discrimination and western education.
- Character identification of Adah as presented in the novel.
- Adah’s departure to England: travels by sea with her children, Titi and Vicky; seen off by her brother, Boy.
- Reasons for the departure: desires to have further education in England, wants to reunite with her husband, wishes to give her children an English Education, she wants to escape the burden of the responsibilities of catering for Francis’ family.
- The significance of Adah’s departure: Adah’s departure to England results in her achieving her dream goal. Adah’s sojourn opens a window into the importance of interpersonal bonds or relationships.
