Observation

Question 3(a) required candidates were required to define some woodworking machine processes. Candidates scored below average in this questions. The expected responses are:

(i)   Deeping; This is involves ripping of wood on thickness.

(ii)  Turning between centers; This is a lathe operation of fixing wood pieces between the headstock and the tailstock for turning shapes. It is also called spindle turning. Tables and bed legs are some of the work pieces achievable through the operation.

(iii)  Trenching: This is the process of cutting recesses across the grain. After sawing, chisels and mallets are used in finishing up the trench. It is useful in housing joints.
