(b) Tickets for a movie premiere cost $18.50 each while the bulk purchase price for 5 tickets is $80.00. If 4 gentlemen decide to get a fifth person to join them so that they can share the bulk purchase price equally, how much would each person save?
Observation
The Chief Examiner reported that in part (a), a good number of candidates were able to tackle part (a) of this question. However, some candidates still had difficulties in listing all the required sets accurately and using curly brackets. In part (b), majority of candidates that attempted it got the correct answer but some failed to write the final answer in two decimal place which is normal for monetary unit.
In part (a), they listed the elements of sets A, B and C as A = {2, 4, 6, 8, 10}, B = {3, 6, 9},
C = {1, 2, 3, 6} respectively which are subsets of = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10}.
They also found the complements of the sets as AI = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9}, BI = {1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10} and
CI = {4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10}. Hence, AI BI CI = {5, 7}.
