The Chief Examiner reported that part (a) of this question was a problem to most candidates because of inability to draw the correct diagram. While in part (b), a good number of candidates’ were able to attempt the question correctly.
In part (a)(i), they were expected to draw the bearing diagram as shown:
In part (a)(ii) I, Using trigonometric ratio, gives cos 34 = . = = 50.66 km. Therefore, = 50.66 km. (4 sig. fig.)
In part (a) (ii) II, using trigonometric ratio gives tan34 = . = 28.329

In part (b), they did as expected by first expanding to get 3 + . Simplifying gives . Taking L.C.M gives . Simplifying gives . Solving gives y = = – 24.
