Question 2

With reference to The Dead March in Saul by G.F. Handel,

a. Write brief notes on the piece under the following

  • key signature;
  • time signature;
  • speed indication;
  • modulations;
  • sections;
  • form.

b. state the dynamic makings for the opening and closing phrases of the piece;

c.      explain the functions of each of the curved lines as used in (c)(i) and (ii) above.

With reference to Choba Nwa Nnem as arranged by Elsa Toffolon and Meki Nzewi,

  •    quote the opening four bars of the melody (with the text);
  •    what dramatic effect is recommended (as footnote) by the arrangers to enhance  the mood of the performance of the piece?       
  •  describe the mood of the piece;
    1.      identify any three other works by Meki Nzewi.

Observation

Again here, the candidates also performed poorly.  from all indication, their poor performance emanated from their poor preparation towards the examination.  The very few that studied either of the piece, made their mark by supplying the expected answers such as:

 

With reference to The Dead March in Saul by G. F. Handel,

  a. i  The piece opens with the tonic key of C major and ends as such

    (ii)          /common time

(iii)   Adagio/very slow (1 mark)
   (iv)   G major, D minor
    (v)   Two sections of A & B
   (vi)   Binary

(b)      Snapping of the thumb and middle finger of both hands
 (c)  Lament/sorrow/grief/sadness/pitiable.
