-
(a) (i) Name any two pedals on the piano
(ii) Explain the function(s) of the two pedals named in 3 (a) (i)
(b) Identify the four piano compositions from the following:
The Trout, Linden Lea, Fur Elise, Papillon, Sleepers Wake, Rondo a Capriccio, The Entertainer.
Observation
The question was popular among the candidates but they performed poorly in this question. They should have stated the following points in order to obtain the maximum obtainable marks in the question:
(a) (i) Sostenuto, Damper Pedal, Una Corda/Soft Pedal
(ii)
- Sostenuto Pedal : It is the middle pedal on a grand piano. When it is depressed and certain keys are held down, it prevents the dampers of those particular keys from returning to the string until the pedal is released.
- Damper Pedal: It allows the notes to continue vibrating after the fingers release the keys.
- Soft pedal: It is the pedal on the piano that reduces volume. It is pressed in order to shift the position of the piano hammers, so that fewer strings are struck per note.
(b) Fur Elise, Papillon, Rondo a Capriccio, The Entertainer
