Question 4
Chords
Observation
Candidates’ performance in this question was good. The question required candidates to listen to a chord progression consisting of 8 chords in the key of C major and then identify the chord used in the progression. Despite the question was popular among the candidates, some of the candidates that attempted the question could not recognise first and second inversion of chords from the root position, thereby losing greater parts of the mark allotted to the question. Candidates were expected to respond thus:
(i) I (Tonic root position) (v) V (Dominant root position)
(ii) Ib (Tonic first inversion) (vi) IV (Subdominant root position)
(iii) IV (Subdominant root position) (vii) V (Dominant root Position)
(iv) Ic (Tonic second inversion) (viii) I (Tonic root position)
