Question 5: (a) Define the term safety.
(b) In relation to safety regulations at work, outline:
(i) three responsibilities of the employer;
(ii) three duties of the employer.
Majority of the candidates attempted the question and performed fairly. They were expected to provide the following answers in order to score good marks:
(a) Definition of safety
- It is a preventive measure taken or observed by personnel against
accident on the site to ensure good working condition.
- A precaution taken to avoid accident on site.
(b) (i) Responsibilities of the employer
The employer should:
- provide a safe work environment;
- provide machine and method of work;
- ensure that machines and materials being used are stored and transported
to site safely;
- provide safety equipment for employee;
- provide training and supervision to employee;
- provide safe entrance and exits to work place;
- maintain good welfare facilities;
- publish and display safety policy/regulation;
- ensure the public is not exposed to risk;
- provide First-Aid facilities on site.
(ii) Duties of the employee
- Takes care of his/her safety and the co-workers.
- Follows the safety regulations which apply to the work place.
- Must not be careless with items provided for safety purpose.
- Stores tools and materials after use in the appropriate place.
- Co-operate with the employer in making area safe.
