       (ii)     Explain how a tie is resolved in a javelin event.                 .                 [3 marks]

(c)   (i)      List four phases involved in high jump event.                                     [4 marks]
 
      (ii)      State four instances when an athlete could be penalised in a triple
                 jump event.                                                                                 [4 marks]

Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates, and their performance was poor. 

In part (a)(ii) candidates could not explain the difference between the bunch style and elongated style of crouch start in athletics.   In part (b)(i) candidates could not state the characteristics of throwing events in athletics.  In part (b)(ii) many candidates could not explain how a tie is resolved in a javelin event.
The expected answers were as follows:
(a)(ii)   Differences between bunch style and elongated style of the crouch start in athletics

  1. Bunch style is used by a short sprinter while elongated style is used by a tall sprinter;
  2. In the bunch style, the foot of the front leg is near the starting line while in the elongated style the foot of the front leg is farther away from the starting line;
  3. In the bunch style, the knee of the rear leg is placed in line with the toes of the front foot while in the elongated style the knee of the rear leg is placed in line with the heel of the front foot.

(b)(i)    Characteristics of throwing events in athletics

  1. Throwing missile lands in a designated sector to be valid;
  2. Events are associated with measurement of distance;
  3. Competitors have a minimum of 3 and maximum of 6 trials;
  4. The best throw is always used to determine athletes position;
  5. Use of both red and white flags;
  6. Throwing events involve stance;
  7. Throwing events involve gathering momentum/preliminary swing;
  8. Throwing events involve release of the missile;
  9. Throwing events involve recovery from the release.                                                                                                                                                              

   (b)(ii)            Explanation on resolving a tie in a javelin event

  • The athlete with the second best throw is awarded a higher place;
  • If the tie remains the third best throw is awarded a higher place;
  • If tie still remains for the first place tying athletes throw again until tie is resolved.
