This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was good. In part (a)(i) candidates correctly defined a long distance race, in (a) (ii) candidates listed types of start in sprint races, In (a)(iii) candidates named the head of officiating officials for track event in athletics. In part (b) candidates correctly explained the following terms as used in athletics: sector, hop, step and jump, beat the gun. In part (c) candidates also correctly stated rules guiding a discus competition in athletics.
However, the expected answers were as follows:
2(a)(i) Long distance race
Any race that covers 3000 metres and above/run at moderate speed over a long period of time requiring aerobic energy.
(ii) Types of start in sprint races
- bunch/bullet style
- medium style
- elongated style
(iii) Head of officiating officials for track events in athletics
(b) Explanation on the following terms as used in athletics
(i) Sector
Is the demarcated landing area for missile projecting from the throwing circle in throwing events/diagram.
(ii) Hop, Step and Jump
Jumping technique used in a triple jump event/explained.
(iii) Beat the gun
The taking off by the runner in a race before the sound of the gun, starter’s gun/whistle/clapper/explained
(c) Rules guiding a discus competitor in athletics
- discus must land within the sector
- each competitor is allowed three to six trials and credited with the best of
his/her throw
- competitor must not leave the circle until the discuss has touched the ground
- competitor must leave the circle from the rear
- as soon as a competitor starts the throw, he shall not touch the stopboard or
the ground
outside the circle with any part of the body
- each competitor is credited and placed with the best throw.
