This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was fair. In part (a) many candidates could not correctly say what is drug abuse. In part (b) candidates also could not correctly state effects of drugs on an athlete, they wrote it helps in repairing worn out tissues, it makes our body not to be well, it causes high blood pressure, it causes lack of nutrients, it causes sleeping sickness and reduction in weight as effects of drugs on an athlete.
However, the expected answers were as follows:
2(a) Drug abuse
Use of drugs indiscriminately without doctor’s prescription/Taking of drugs without medical or professional advice and direction.
(b) Effects of drugs on an athlete
- it leads to anti-social behaviour
- it leads to mental disorder
- athlete is easily tired/does not last for the duration of the game
- drugs keep athlete in high spirit which may lead to violence on the pitch/field
- drugs affect organs of the athlete e.g. heart, liver and kidney/unconsciousness/
shock/death
- may lead to hazardous and uncoordinated performance/low performance
- may lead to improved performance.
