The diagram below illustrates an event in athletics. Study it and answer questions 1 (a) to (e).



(a)        (i)         Name the event illustrated in the diagram.                                              [1 mark]
(ii)        What is the name given to an individual participating in the illustrated event?

(b)        Describe each of the following skills in the illustrated event:
(i)         hold;                                                                                                    [3 marks]
(ii)        stance;                                                                                                 [3 marks]
(iii)       the release.                                                                                          [3 marks]
(c)       

(i)         Mention the facility used for the event.                                      [1 mark]
(ii)        State the dimensions of the following parts of the facility:
I.          the sector;                                                                                [1 mark]
II          the diameter.                                                                            [1 mark]
(d)        State five instances in when there would be no throw in the event.                       [5 marks]
(e)        Outline six rules and regulations associated with the event.                                 [6 marks]

Observation

 

 

This question was popular among the candidates. Majority of them responded to it.

In part (a), majority of the candidates could not name the illustrated event.

In part (b), majority of the candidates could not describe hold, stance and the release as skills in the illustrated event.

In part (c), majority of the candidates could not mention the facility used for the event.

In part (d), majority of the candidates could not state the instances when there would be no throw in the event.

In part (e), majority of the candidates could not outline rules and regulations associated with the event.


However, the expected answers are as follows:

  • (a)        (i)         Name of the event
  • Shot put.                                                       

                        (ii)        Name of the person participating in the event

  • Shot putter.           

(b)                    Description of the skills
Hold

  • Fingers spread around the missile/shot.
  • Shot/missile rests on the base of the fingers/the shot/missile is propped.
  • Missile/shot does not touch the palm.
  • The third middle finger gives support at the back.
  • While the thumb and the last finger give support in front.     

Stance

  • In an astride position.
  • Legs shoulder width apart.
  • Missile /shot tucked into the neck region/missile tucked into the check.
  • Side/back the direction of landing                                                   

The release

  • The putting elbow faces backward.
  • The non-putting elbow faces direction of landing.
  • Body slants towards the direction of putting hand.
  • The putting hand pushes missile/shot forward forcefully.
  • The push is from the neck.                                                 

(c)          (i)            Facility used for shot put
-     Shot put circle/throwing circle.
-     Throwing sector.                                             
(ii)           Dimension of the parts of shot put

  • The sector – 34.92.                                               
  • The diameter – 2.135 m.          

            (d)        Instances when there would be no throw in shot put
if the

  • putter throws instead of putting the missile.
  • putter touches any part of the ground outside the throwing circle.
  • shot/missile lands outside the throwing sector.
  • putter leaves the throwing circle from the front half.
  • putter leaves the circle before the missile / shot lands.
  • putter touches the stop board with any part of the body.
  • shot/missile is not put from the neck/chin.
  • putter touches the throwing circle line with any part of the body.

(e)           Rules and regulations associated with shot put
-        each competitor shall be credited with the best throw.
-        the putter must commence / start putting from a stationary position.
-        the putter must not touch the stop board.
-        the putter must not touch the ground outside the throwing circle after the putter has started to make the putting/release.
-        the putter must not leave the circle until the missile/shot landed.
-        if there is a tie and it is not resolved the third best is used to resolve the tie.
-        no target mark should be placed within the  landing sector.
-        for the put to be valid it must land  within the sector.
-        the putter should not tape his hand or wrist for support.
-        the shot must be put not thrown.
-        the shot must be held with fingers and not the palm.
-        the zero end of the measuring tape must be in the landing sector when measuring.
-        all valid throws must be measured from the nearest mark made to the inner edge of the stop board.
-        a putter is allowed a maximum of six trials/minimum of three trials.
-        a putter has a maximum of 60 seconds to respond to a call for a trial.

    -        the shot must be put from the shoulder with one hand.
