Question 8

An electron of charge 1.60 x 10-19C is accelerated under a potential difference of 1.0 x 105V. Calculate the energy of the electron in joules.

Observation

Candidates are expected to recognize the energy of the electron as the product of its charge value and the potential difference applied.  However, some candidates found the arithmetic processes involving standard notations difficult to handle.  Performance was below average.

The expected answer is

The energy of the electron  =  E = eV
                                                  = 1.6. x 10-19 x 1.0 x 105
                                                  =  1.6 x 10-14J
