Observation

Few candidates were able to:

• List four tools used in pipe jointing
• State one use of bastard file and plunger.

However, majority of them were unable to state one use of each of the following tools:

-           bastard file;
-           plunger.

The required responses to question 5 are given below.

(a)   (i) TOOLS USED IN PIPE JOINTING:

• Pipe wrench
• Adjustable plier
• Foot print
• Spanner

         (ii)  SAFETY PRECAUTIONS TO BE OBSERVED WHILE WORKING ON CONSTRUCTION SITE:

• hold pipes firmly while threading;                                                    
• Pipe ends should be cleaned before soldering;                                                                                                                    
• Standard fittings must be used.

(b)   (i) Bastard file is a coarse file used for very rough surfaces before smooth filing.
        (ii) plunger is used to remove blockage in sinks, baths, wash hand basin.
