  1. Define the term pointillism.
  2. List any one artwork produced using pointillism.
  3. State any six contributions of Paul Cezanne to modern art.

 

Observation

Few of the candidates attempted this question and performed below average. The candidates were expected to answer in the following way:

 

(a)                    Definition of Pointillism
-           A term/technique in art that is related to drawing and painting.
-           It is an artistic term from the French word Point meaning dot that describes a technique  of neo- impressionism painting.
-           A technique that entails the scientific combination of the primary colours (blue, red and yellow).
-           Building up of pictures by means of small regular dots of unbroken colours that look like mosaic.
-           It is a style which involves the use of dots to create the illusion of form.
-           Pointillism is called divisionism.
-           It is also called chromo-luminarism.
-           It was a reaction against the prevailing movement of impressionists which was based on the subjective responses of individual artists.
-           It was a revolutionary painting technique pioneered by Georges Seurat, Camille Pissaro and Paul Signac in Paris in the mid-1880s/19th Century.
-           A movement that flourished between 19th and 20th centuries.
-           Technique that aims at encouraging the use of brilliant colours that was
adopted by George Seurat and Paul Signac.

-           Sunday afternoon on the island.
-           The Hay Harvest.
-           The banks of the Marne at dawn.

(c)                    Contributions of Paul Cezanne to modern art
-           He developed an ideal naturalistic synthesis.
-           The first artist to consider the appearance of pictorial forms more important than the realistic representation of the subject.
-           Paul Cezanne’s work laid the foundation for modern art such as cubism.
-           Cezanne’s paintings inspired the breakdown of forms into geometric shapes.
-           He and others like Seurat and Gauguin led the invention of a vivid symbolic world of decorative pattern.
-           His works inspired many modern and contemporary master artists.
-           He is known for his search for solution to problems of representation.
-           He is the first artist of his generation to break away from impressionism.
-           He is the father of Modern art.
-           He is considered classical in spirit because of the intellectual process involved in his works.
-           He pioneered the essence of showing natural rather than mere surface
description.
