Question 1
Make the test piece shown on page 2, using the timber which has been planed to the following sizes (all dimensions are in millimetres): two pieces – 230 x 40 x 30 hardwood; two pieces – 150 x 40 x 20 hardwood; one piece – 230 x 150 x 6 plywood; two pieces countersunk screws 6 x 8. SPECIAL TOOLS Rebate plane, sliding bevel/dovetail template and dovetail saw.

Observation
Candidates were required to make lapped dovetail joints. Most candidates were able to make the joints correctly. Each candidate’s final workpiece was to have two tails (4 pitches, 4 sides and 4 shoulders) and two sockets (4 sides, 2 ends, 2 bottoms and fitness of joints).
