This question was well attempted by the candidates and their performance was okay.

The solution is stated below:

(A) Two safety precautions to be observed when using a grinding stone

                        -           wear goggles;
-           wear hand gloves;
-           use coolant/lubricant;
-           avoid too-much pressure;
-           use the total width of the grinding stone;
-           hold tool firmly on the stone;
-           wear overall/apron;
-           ensure that tool rest is in place and secure;
-           ensure that stones are properly and securely fixed;
-           ensure that stone guard is in place;
-           allow machine to reach maximum speed before feeding;
-           switch off machine after use.

(i) Candidates were expected to list two types of machine saws most of the candidates were listing types of wood working machines.

The solution is stated below:

                        Types of machine saw

-           circular saw bench;
-           radial-arm saw;
-           band saw;
-           jig saw/fret saw;
-           mitre saw;
-           dimension saw;
-           saber saw.

(ii)        List two types of portable power saws

Some of the candidates who attempted this question were listing hand saws and other portable tools.

Candidates were expected to list any two of the following:

Types portable power saws

-           circular saw;
-           jig saw;
-           chain saw.

(c) Most of the candidates responded well to this question, although there were some spelling errors in their solutions.
