1. Identify the figure A below

(a) Write notes on the object in figure A, focusing on:
1. Origin/Country;
2. Medium;
3. Function;
4. Features.

The question was not popular among the candidates. Few of them scored average marks, but most candidates could not identify the figure rightly. The figure was wrongly identified as Ife, Benin or Nok figure. This made the candidates to lose obtainable marks.

Candidates were expected to respond to the question in the following manner:

1. Identification: Nomoli figure.
2. Notes on object:
   i. Origin:   Mende, Sierra Leone.
   ii.Medium:    Soapstone.
   iii.Function:     Fertility - used for agricultural rites to ensure good  harvest.
   iv Features:    - Seated figure.
                        - arms folded on the chest.
                        -  eyes, nose and mouth exaggerated.
                        -  big, bulged conical eyes.
                        - broad nose.
                        -   thick lips.
                        -  widened and closed mouth.
                        -  head bigger than the body (African proportion).
