OBSERVATION

This question was well attempted by the candidates.  In 7(a) (i-iv), majority of the candidates could explain dipping, culling and quarantine as used in animal production; but could not explain the term dry cow.

In 7(b), most of the candidates were unable to describe the life cycle of roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides).

However, in 7(c), majority of the candidates could list methods of identifying farm animals.

The expected answers include:

Dry cow
This is a cow which has stopped lactating due to old age.

Life cycle of roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides)

  • The adult female lays eggs inside the host animal which are passed out on to the
       ground along with faeces;
  • The eggs are contained in a resistant shell (cyst) to enable them survive for a long
       time until they hatch;
  • The eggs which are in cyst, are swallowed by animals either through contaminated
       water or feed;
  • Inside the host animal, they hatch;
  • They then move round the whole animal body until they reach the lung from
       where they get to the mouth through the bronchial tube;
  • From the mouth they are swallowed back to the stomach;
  • They then live in the intestine and grow to adults while feeding on
      digested food.
