(b) Outline three roles of each of the following soil management practices:
(i) Green manuring;
(ii) Mulching. [6 marks]
(c) Give six reasons for carrying out irrigation in crop production. [6 marks]

OBSERVATION

This question was well attempted by the candidates. In 4(a)(i), majority of the candidates could define
the term soil tillage. However, in 4(a)(ii), many candidates were unable to distinguish between primary tillage and secondary tillage.

 

However, in
4(b) (i & ii), majority of the candidates were able to outline the roles of soil management
. practices such as green manuring and mulching. Further to this, most of the candidates could give the
reasons for carrying out irrigation in crop production.
The expected answers include:
Distinction between primary tillage and secondary tillage
Primary tillage is the breaking of the soil into big clods with the aid of the plough or other appropriate
implement.
Whereas,
Secondary soil tillage is the pulverizing/breaking of the soil clods into fine tilth.
