This question was poorly attempted by the candidates. In 4a (i), majority of the candidates were able to identify specimens P(Saw dust) and R(Bird). However, majority of the candidates could neither state the reasons why the use of specimen P(Saw dust) is not recommended in the brooder house nor mention other materials that could be used in place of specimen P (Saw dust) in a brooder house as required in 4(a)(ii-iii). More so, most of the candidates were unable to give the name given to the product formed when poultry droppings mix with specimen P(Saw dust) as required in 4 a(iv). Also, most of them could not state the agricultural uses of the product formed when poultry droppings mix with specimen P(Saw dust) as required in 4 a(v).
Finally, majority of the candidates were able to state the ways of controlling specimen R(Bird) in crop production as required in 4 (b).
The expected answers include:
4a (ii) Reasons why the use of specimen P(Saw dust) is not recommended in a brooder
house
- It contaminates the feed
- It contaminates the water
- It may get into the eyes of the chicks and lead to blindness
- It may lead to breathing difficulty if it enters the nostrils of chicks
- Chicks tend to feed on it and in the process may contact disease
- Cakes up easily and loses ability to absorb droppings
- May accommodate sharp objects like nails which could harm the farmer/animal
(iii) Alternative material for Specimen P(Sawdust) in a brooder house
- Rice husk
- Wood shavings
- Dried groundnut husks
- Ground maize cobs
- Crushed dry Kenaf stems
- Dry grass
(iv) Name given to the product formed when poultry droppings mix with Specimen P (Sawdust)
- Farmyard manure/poultry manure
(v) Uses of the product mentioned in 4a(iv) in agricultural production
- To improve soil fertility
- To improve soil structure/binds soil particles together
- For compost making
- For fertilization of fish pond
- To generate biogas
- Processed to feed ruminants/part of feed for ruminants
