OBSERVATION

Many candidates were able to:

  1. state correct function of constituents of concrete;
  2. produce good sketches of timbering to a trench.

However, few of them were unable to state the three methods of setting out a building.

The expected response to question 1 is as given below:

(a) (i) 3:4:5 method;
(ii) use of Builder’s square;

  1. use of surveying instrument (i.e. the use of optical square, site-square or theodolite);

(b) (i) cement binds the particles of aggregates together to form a  solid mass;

  • fine aggregate: serve as fillers in concrete;
  • coarse aggregate: distributes the stresses in concrete;
  • water facilitates the hydration of cement in the concrete or lubricates the aggregates.
