(a) (i) State three properties of a lubricant.
           
(ii) State three functions of engine lubricating oil.

(b) Describe the process of checking the level of oil in the following:
(i) gearbox;
(ii) engine.

OBSERVATION

This question attracted most of the candidates.  Most of the candidates thought properties and function mean the same thing.  Hence they wrote same answers for (a)(i) and (a)(ii).  The correct response to (a)(i) is as follows:

The properties of a lubricant are:
- viscosity, flow and body;

while the correct response to (a)(ii) is

The functions of engine lubricating oil are:

  1. to reduce friction;
  2. to reduce wear;
  3. to prevent corrosion;
  4. to act as a cooling agent.
