  1. An electrical component has a resistance of 10 ohms.  If the voltage across the component is 12 volts, calculate the:
  2. Current flowing through the component;
  3. Heat dissipated in the component when the current flows for 5 seconds.
  1. State five periodic maintenance required on a car battery.

OBSERVATION
  1. Most of the candidates got the answer wrong because they did not know the simple formulae;   V = IR and H = IVt.  The required solution to a(i) is

V         =          lR
R         =          l0,  V = 12
I           =          V      =    12      =    1.2 Amperes
                        R            10

            The required solution to a(ii) is

            H         =          IV t
                        I           =          1.2
                        V         =          12
                        t           =          5

            H         =          1 . 2  x 12  x  5
                        =          72 joules.

  1. This part of the question did not pose much problem to the candidates.
