  1. (a)  (i)         Sketch one leading and one trailing shoe hydraulic brake arrangement;

                        (ii)        Indicate on the sketch, the direction of drum rotation;
                        (iii)       Label any four parts.

(b)        State why the two leading shoe arrangement is preferred on the front wheels to the rear wheels.
           
(c)        (i)         State one cause of a spongy brake pedal;
                        (ii)        State how the fault in (c) (i) can be remedied.

OBSERVATION

Most of the candidates who attempted this question were able to provide the required
response to part (c). They found parts (a) and (b) difficult.  The required responses to parts  (a) and (b) are given below:

                  (a)        (i), (ii) and (iii)

(b)        The two leading shoe arrangement is preferred on the front of a vehicle because

-           it has more braking force;
-           it has ¾ of the total braking force which prevent the vehicle from skidding when the brakes are applied or it is relatively more stable;
-           the same braking power is available in reverse as well as when moving forward;
-           both shoes have a self-servo action.
