Question 6

  • How did the people of British West African territories govern themselves before the advent of colonial rule?
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Observation

This question was very unpopular with the candidates as majority of them avoided it.  The very few candidates that attempted it scored very low marks due to their inability to remember salient points and failure to expatiate their loosely identified points.  The overall candidates’ performance in the question was poor.  In order to score good marks in this question, candidates were expected to highlight some of the following points:

  • The people were governed by customs, norms, rules and regulations;
  • The Paramount Chief was at the apex of the administration;
  • The Chiefs and Council of Elders made laws;
  • The age grades executed laws;
  • The traditional rulers and elders exercised legislative, executive and judicial functions i.e. there was no separation of powers;
  • The Chief Priests and the Secret Societies performed religious functions, etc.
