Question 7

  • What were the main features of the French policy of Assimilation in West Africa?
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Observation

This question was a straightforward one but very unpopular with candidates.Majority of those that attempted it managed to stumble on some points which were sparsely expatiated thereby loosing a lot of marks.

Worse still, many of those that attempted the question wrote off-point.
They wasted their precious time writing on the policy of Association instead of Assimilation.  All these impediments retarded the overall candidates’ performance to below average.

Candidates were expected to state some of the following points to score good marks:

  • The French empire was renamed French Union and colonies renamed Overseas.  Territories were represented in the Union;
  • It involved greater autonomy of administrative councils;
  • There was diversity of culture and therefore recognition of African culture and traditional rulers;
  • Personal liberties e.g. freedom of assembly, association and universal suffrage were extended to all Africans;
  • It created local national assembly;
  • It abolished dual citizenship and French citizenship was extended to all the overseas territories, etc.
