Discuss the theme of deception in the play.

Observation

The following points are expected to be developed by the candidates:
(a) Hlestakov’s appreance at the inn deceives Bob and Dob who spread the rumour and misleading information to the Mayor.
(b) The deception brought the Mayor on his feet as he is a very dishonest and corrupt government official in his locality.
(c) This deception makes the Mayor to seek Hlestakov’s co-operation by bribing and offering him assistance, thinking that Hlestakov’s is the expected inspector general.
(d) More deception emerges in the play from Hlestakov and his servant Yosif when they discover that the people mistake  Hlestakov as the government Inspector and they play along enjoying themselves due to the people’s ignorance.
(e) The Mayor’s wife and daughter are deceived and fall victims of Hlestakov’s deception as the government Inspector.
(f) The townspeople are deceived as they complain to Hlestakov about the corrupt Mayor, with the hope that they would be rescued, taking him for the Government inspector.
Few candidates attempted the question and their performance was fair.
