Observation

While some candidates attempt in question 1 (a) was encouraging, others out rightly failed to do 'justice' as required; they lacked the required skill needed to tackle the question appropriately.
Candidates should try and imitate to some extent the rhythmic and melodic patterns/features shown in the opening phrase.
For example, if one is writing in ABA (ternary) form, the B section should however be contrasted.e.g

Candidates should be able to mark off the phrases in 2 bar lengths for easier management while the modulation to the required related key is better in the middle section.
In the alternative question, some of the identified problems that led to poor performance were poor
(i)         knowledge of accented and unaccented syllabus;
(ii)        delineation and alignment of text below their corresponding notes;
(iii)       use of vocal slurs;
(iv)       knowledge of average vocal range for each ofthe different voices (soprano, alto, tenor and bass).
(v)        knowledge of suitable melodies that make some artistic sense.
For question 1 b - Two part writing, some candidates performed excellently well by adding the canonic imitation either at the tonic or subdominant thereby scoring the total mark accrue to the question.
For question l(c) - Four - Part Harmony, many candidates faired well here. However, the given suggested chords also assisted in enhancing the level of their performance.
