(a) Explain any three of the following terms as applied to African music:
(i) Call and response;
(ii) Pentatonic scale;
(iii) Syncopation;
(iv) Speech rhythm;
(v) Cross rhythm.
(b) State any three functions of music in African culture.
While the (a) part of this question was not quite attractive to the candidates, they were at home with the (b) part. Their ability to supply the expected answers to (a) or (b) part made them score the full marks allotted to the question.
