Question 1

Melody Writing

Either

Continue the melody below to form a passage of not less than 12 and not more than 16 bars.
Modulate to the dominant key in the course of the passage and return to the home key.

or

Set the text below to a suitable melody.   Indicate the tempo, phrasing and dynamic marks.  Credit will be given for originality of the comportion and proper alignment of texts to the notes.

Brightly shine, the students of music,
The hopes of tomorrow
Building together a word
Where peace and joy shall reign.

(b)     Two-Part Writing

          Add an independent flowing bass to the melody below

(c) Four – Part Harmony

Harmonize the melody below by adding Alto, Tenor and Bass parts.  Introduce some non-harmonic tones, where appropriate.

Observation

While some of the candidates performed well in their response to question 1(a), others failed to ‘do justice.  Also in the alternative question, candidates’ performance was remarkable as incidence of plagiarism has now reduced and their answers (tunes) are getting more original.

In question 1(b) – Two Part Writing, candidates’ performance has improved as they were able to contrast the rhythm between the given melody and the added part.. while in question 1(c) – Four Part Harmony, candidates were unable to successfully attack the modulation in the harmony.
