Either

With reference to Sonatina in C (first and second movement) Op 36 No. 1 by M Clementi

(a)  Define Sonatina

(b)  In what period did the composer live?

(c) Identify any two compositional devices used in the first movement.

(d)  Give the meaning of the following terms/signs:

(i) < mf;
(ii)
p;
(iii)
tr.

(e)  State the harmonic device used by the composer in the bass part of the second movement.

(f)  For what medium was the music composed?

       or

        With reference to Ojo Maa Rọ by Ayọ Bankọle,

(a) Quote the first four bars of the song with the notes

(b)  Notate in staff notation the scale (in the key of F major) upon which the melody of the music is based

(c) Mention any other four vocal works by Ayọ Bankọle.

Observation

It was obvious that majority of the candidates did not study the prescribed works for question 2.  As a result, most of them avoided it while those that attempted it could not ‘do justice’ to the questions.

Some of the expected answers are:

Either sonatina in C (first and second movement) by M. Clementi.

(a) A small sonata.  A work with the formal characteristics of a sonata but on a smaller scale and often less technically demanding for the performer.

(b) classical period.

(c) Repetition, sequence, scales, alberti bass.
