Question 3

               Question 3
                  State:

  1.   the difference between plane polarized light and ordinary light;
  2.    two uses of polaroids.

                Though a popular question, part (a) was poorly attempted while part (b) on
                uses of Polaroid was satisfactorily attempted.

  Part (a) many candidates failed to see the particle nature of light.  That is they
  failed to recognize the wave – particule duality nature of light.  Hence in their
  explanation they saw light vibrating in a plane or planes and not the particles.

     The expected answers are:

   (a)      In plane polarized light, the vibrations of the particles are confined to
             a single plane while in ordinary light, the particles vibrate in many
             planes

     (b)            Polaroid
               e.g.      -    used in sun glasses to reduce the intensity of sunlight
                        -    used to eliminate reflected light or glare
                        -    sacharimetry/measurement of concentration of sugar solution
                        -    (photo elastic) stress analysis
                        -    production of three dimensional fil
