Question 6

Question 6

  1.   List two factors that can affect the rate of diffusion.
  2.   State two examples to illustrate the effects of surface tension.

The question was poorly attempted.  In part (a), most candidates were able to mention temperature as a factor affecting the rate of diffusion.  However, majority of the candidates listed “concentration’ instead of concentration gradient as the second factor.

In part (b), some candidates confused diffusion with surface tension.  Hence they could hardly state one example correctly

The expected answers are:
             (a)   Rate of diffusion
                e.g.  Density/volume/size/speed
                        Concentration gradient
                        Temperature.
                         Cross-sectional area of container

         (b)    Effect of surface tension
e.g. soap bubbles are spherical in shape
                       -   water skaters are able to walk on the surface of water
                       -    clean razor blade/needle gently placed on the surface of water floats

                       -    spilled mercury on (clean) glass surface forms spherical droplets.
