SECTION B

Two sheets of drawing paper, 550 x 375 mm are provided.

Use one of the sheets of drawing papers to answer question 5 and the other sheet to answer questions 6.

All dimensions are in millimeters.  You should work to the main dimensions but where no dimensions are given, you should use your own discretion.

Marks will be awarded for draughtsmanship.

Answer all the questions.

A coffee table is to be designed to the following specification:

 length            -           750;
width               -           450;
height             -           400.

(all dimensions are in millimeters)

The coffee table has a shelf half way down the top.  The top and the shelf are each to be made from 12 mm plywood.  The under frame is to be constructed from 30 mm hardwood.

(5)        Make two preliminary freehand pictorial sketches each for a different design of the coffee table.

(6)        Select one of the sketches in question 1 and indicate the sketch selected with a tick (√)
To a scale of 1:5, draw in the Third Orthographic Projection the following views of the selected sketch:

(a)front elevation;

(b)plan with top removed.

Observation

 

dimension according to the specification given.  Many also made the same sketch twice.

Candidates were expected to do the following:

-           use pictorial freehand sketches to describe the design of the coffee table;
-           sketch to meet the given specification;
-           draw in isometric;
-           dimension appropriately;
-           sketch for resemblance;
-           use freehand.

Front Elevation

In drawing the front elevation, candidates were expected to:

           

  • indicate the sketch selected;
  • draw the top;
  • draw top rail;
  • draw shelf (hidden/elevation);     
  • legs (2 off)  21;
  • indicate 2 joints;
  • scale properly;
  • dimensioning (at least 2); 
  • line quality;
  • name the view.

Candidates were expected to do the following:

  • position in third angle orthographic projection;
  • project from front elevation; 
  • draw legs in section (4 off) ;
  • draw end rails (2 off) ;
  • draw side rails (2 off) ;
  • draw shelf in elevation;
  • indicate the  joints (at least 2);
  • draw to scale;
  • dimensioning appropriately;
  • show line quality;
  • name the view.
