    • State four functions of blood in the human body.                                                        [4 marks]

Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was poor, few candidates performed well.  In part (a) many candidates could not correctly name the blood vessel that carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart.  They took pulmonary artery as pulmonary vein.  In part (b) candidates correctly state functions of blood in the human body.

The expected answers were as follows:

1(a)      Blood vessel that carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart

  • Pulmonary vein

 

 (b)       Functions of blood in the human body

  • to carry nourishment to all parts of the body/named e.g. glucose, protein, vitamins
  • to  convey the hormones or chemical substances round the body i.e. secretion of the ductless glands e. g. insulin from the pancreas
  • to carry antibodies/promote immunity
  • to aid or help in the defence of the body/fighting disease/white blood cells fight diseases
  • to convey oxygen to tissues by means of hemoglobin in the red cells
  • to carry out waste products from the organs of the tissue/explained e.g. Co2 => lungs Urea from liver => kidneys
  • to  maintain equal temperature
  • to maintain water and electrolyte balance
  • blood clots formed to prevent excessive bleeding
