Observation

 

This question was attempted by few candidates and their performance was poor.  In aprt (a) candidates could not correctly state the difference between intramural and extramural sports competition many candidates wrote wrong answers by writing intramural as activities done in the home, inside the rooms without getting out, nursery versus primary school and extramural activities as African Games, Olympic Commonwealth, African Youth Championship, Australian Open.  In part (b) candidates could not correctly state advantages and disadvantages of competition, few candidates wrote wrong answers by writing it helps in courage, it helps in agility and it helps to qualify.

In part (c) candidates correctly name somatotypes.

 However, the expected answers were as follows:

8 (a)     Differences between intramural and extramural competition
           
Intramural competitions include those activities which are organised within the same school while extramural competitions involve two or more schools organised outside the school
                                                            or
In Intramural, pupils of the same school compete among themselves while in extramural, pupils of different schools compete among themselves.

(b) (i)   Advantages of competition

  •    It increases interest and effort among participants
  •    It aids development of mental and physical ability
  •    It gives opportunity of improve and perfect skill
  •    It aids acquisition of leadership and followership traits/sportsmanship
  •    It fosters unity among participants
  •    It gives opportunity to win prizes
  •    it gives opportunity to know other places and the culture of such places
  •    it fosters friendship
  •    it gives satisfaction and enjoyment

 (i)        Disadvantages of competition

  •    Provides little or no correction opportunity during the competition
  •    Fighting/violence may result/lead to destruction
  •    May breed unhealthy rivalry
  •    Dishonesty may be experienced whereby a judge/official may favour one team against the other
