Question 1
- State Kirchhoff’s Voltage Law.
- Using Fig. 1, calculate:
- Algebraic sum of the e.m.fs;
- Total resistance (R) in the circuit
- Current (I) flowing through the circuit
Observation
The expected responses were:
- Kirchhoff’s Voltage law states that in a closed loop, the algebraic sum of the electromotive force acting around a loop is equal to the potential difference around the loop.
-
- Algebraic sum of e..m.f.
-
Total resistance
-
Current
- Algebraic sum of e..m.f.
Many of the candidates who attempted this question did not know the importance of e.m.fs, and the difference between e.m.f and voltage drop. Computing total resistance of a series-parallel resistive circuit was difficult for them.
